Paucartambo is located 109 km east of the city of Cusco, at 2830 metres above sea level, and is a beautiful colonial town situated in the eastern ranges of the southern Andes. It is characterised by its white adobe houses, tiled roofs and classic light blue balconies.
The festivity of the Virgin of Paucartambo is a fabulous celebration that summons true human masses of parishioners and visitors from all over the world always accompanied by her people and her 12 groups of dancers that radiate faith, charm, color and joy.
These dances are the most precious offerings that can be offered to the Blessed Mother; they represent a sacrifice of the faithful, performed with love and devotion to the ‘Mamacha’ in exchange for her blessing and protection. This celebration, magical and real at the same time, has a profound religious, social and ritual significance, as it allows us to observe how the identity and customs of the Andean-mestizo peoples have been constructed, defined and maintained. This is clearly manifested in the ‘guerrilla warfare’ between the Qollas of the highlands and the Ch'unchus of the east, a moment of maximum symbolic expression in this lavish festivity, where both nations dispute the K'era right of the Mamacha over the Carlos III bridge, under the waters of the Mapacho river.
In addition, there is a great opportunity to witness a dreamlike natural spectacle in the village of Tres Cruces de Oro, located at 3739 metres above sea level, which serves as the gateway to the Manu National Park.
